Why I Don’t Use Selective Color in My Photography
If you’re unfamiliar with the term, selective color is a technique where most of the image is converted to black and white, while a single color or object is left in color. While it can be eye-catching, there are several reasons why I choose not to use this technique in my work. Here are five reasons why:
-
It’s a Trend – And Trends Don’t Last
Selective color may be trendy now, but trends come and go. I want my photography to have a timeless quality that you'll love for years to come, without feeling dated by passing fads. Classic, beautifully edited images never go out of style. -
It Distracts from the Subject
Our eyes naturally gravitate toward the brightest or most colorful parts of an image. When there’s a single bright color surrounded by grayscale, it pulls focus away from the person in the photo, who should always be the star. I want my clients to be the focal point, not a distracting color accent. -
It Can Take Away from the Image’s Emotional Impact
Color and contrast play important roles in evoking emotions in a photograph. By isolating a single color, you lose the natural balance and mood of the image. The full range of colors can enhance the emotional depth, making the photo more impactful and meaningful. -
The Beauty Is in the Details
The natural colors and tones in a photograph bring out the subtle details that make an image special. Whether it's the glow of natural light, the richness of skin tones, or the textures of fabrics, these elements can get lost when you reduce everything else to grayscale. -
It Can Look Artificial
When only one color is highlighted, it often looks staged or manipulated rather than authentic. I strive to capture real moments, expressions, and connections in a way that feels genuine. Full-color or carefully balanced editing helps keep the focus on the emotion and story behind the image.
By sticking with classic editing techniques, I ensure that your images feel just as beautiful and relevant years from now as they do today. If you’re interested in seeing what an expertly crafted, timeless photo experience looks like, let’s connect!
